With the constant pressure of increasing fleet insurance premiums and fleet maintenance costs, Igloo has undertaken trials of VEDR (Video Event Data Recorder) technology in a selection of its’ van fleet.

The trial will run for 3 to 6 months and involves equipment from two leading suppliers being installed on a selection of vehicles to determine which equipment is best suited to meet our needs.

The equipment comprises of cameras installed on vehicles that are connected to sensors detecting sudden changes in movement such as heavy braking, fast acceleration, sudden swerving or even impacts through accidents. The cameras are permanently running and capture specific events with crystal clear video images when the sensors are triggered.

Roman Pavera, Operations Manager at Igloo Watford comments, “By installing the equipment our intention is primarily to capture bad driving habits so that we can use additional training to improve driver performance. Smooth driving is efficient driving, so better habits lead to lower fuel bills, lower CO2 emissions and less wear and tear on brakes and clutches.” The system provides the additional benefit of being able to capture what took place in the event of an accident, and where appropriate liability can quickly be determined.”  This benefit should lead to a significant reduction in ongoing fleet insurance premiums.

This is just one of many projects underway at Igloo to improve vehicle efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and ensure Igloo’s customers receive a value for money service in times of increasing scrutiny on all costs.
